Money Brain Note #001 | Why I'm Starting This Notebook

June 29, 20262 min read

Thoughts from (and for) my money brain.

It's all about the "Why"

I've spent more than 35 years working with money.

As a stockbroker.
As a wealth manager.
As a financial coach.
As someone who has seen the numbers behind extraordinary success... and extraordinary struggle.

One thing has become increasingly clear.

Money is rarely just about money.

The more people I meet, the less interested I become in what people do with money, and the more curious I become about why.

Why does a promotion make one person feel powerful and another feel terrified?

Why can two people earn exactly the same salary, yet experience completely different levels of financial security?

Why does divorce leave some people financially broken, while others describe it as the moment they finally found financial freedom?

Why do highly successful people still lie awake worrying about money?

And why do so many of us believe our financial behaviour is irrational, when perhaps it makes perfect sense in the context of our experiences, identities and life stories?

These are the questions I can't stop thinking about.

This notebook is where I'll explore them.

Some entries will be observations from conversations and coaching.

Some will be reflections inspired by books or research papers.

Some will begin with nothing more than a question that followed me home from a dog walk.

Not every idea will be right.

Not every question will lead anywhere.

Some may quietly disappear as I learn more.

Others may grow into keynote talks, articles, books or research.

That's part of the process.

If you've found your way here, welcome.

Whether you're interested in psychology, finance, identity, behaviour or simply understanding yourself a little better, I hope these notes encourage you to think differently.

Not because I have all the answers. I don't think I will EVER have all the answers!

But because I believe asking better questions is often where meaningful change begins.

Current status: Beginning.

Let's see where curiosity takes us.

What has your relationship with money taught you about yourself?

I'd love to know your thoughts.
